May 1 marked the grand-opening of the South Vancouver Community Food Hub. In four hours, the front room of South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH) evolved into a pop-up grocery market, serving more 165 community members, half of those being families.
The SVNH team is thankful to the amazing team of enthusiastic volunteers for bringing the space to life—a harmony between those with 25 years of experience, some just beginning their volunteer journeys, as well as many members. There was much joy in seeing lots of familiar faces and welcoming new folks. The registration table was buzzing all morning. The coffee lounge was well enjoyed and fostered a space of mingling, making connections and giving feedback.
Change can be tricky. The location and features of the food hub model was brand new to most volunteers and members. The success of the morning is truly a credit to the openness, resiliency and connections within the South Vancouver community. As grand as the opening was, it also feels like the Food Hub is but a newly planted seed with limitless potential to expand community and food security.
We look forward to the future of this partnership between the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and South Vancouver Neighbourhood House.
